A functional mushroom CPG brand, created by ex-pro athletes Jake Plummer and Rashad Evans, brought us in to reposition the brand and build the marketing system needed to grow beyond a niche wellness audience.
Objective
The functional mushroom category was getting crowded fast. Most brands were chasing the same wellness-and-biohacking audience with the same claims around energy, focus, and immunity. And Umbo, a startup with ex-NFL and UFC founders, risked becoming indistinguishable from the noise. The deeper problem was not category education. It was positioning. With a lean budget and a fast-moving competitive set, Umbo needed a sharper audience, a clearer role in people's lives, and an ownable place to compete that larger brands could not easily copy.
Strategy
We reframed Umbo from a generic functional mushroom brand into an athlete performance and recovery brand, built around a specific growth audience we called the Open-Minded Competitor. These are people who train, compete, and care deeply about performance, but want no part of the aggressive, bro-coded culture that dominates sports nutrition. That audience was already primed to experiment. They did not need to be convinced that performance rituals matter. The job was to make functional mushrooms feel like a legitimate part of that system. The result was the Team Mushrooms platform: a brand operating system covering audience, voice, product architecture, messaging, creative guardrails, and founder-led storytelling that gave Umbo a coherent way to compete from a place of meaning, not just ingredients.
Results
In the first year following the repositioning, Umbo grew revenue 51% year over year and expanded into nationwide REI distribution. The Team Mushrooms platform gave the business a sharper retail story, a clearer foundation for fundraising conversations, and a more ownable way to show up across DTC, content, email, partnerships, and product development. The brand moved from a generic mushroom company to something athletes could actually join.
